1976 Amsterdam Euwe Jubilee Chess Tournament – Karpov’s Performance

In May 1976 Amsterdam hosted a ten-day chess festival celebrating Max Euwe’s 75th birthday. The centerpiece was a four-player double round-robin (“vierkamp”) held at the Van Gogh Museum. Participants were World Champion Anatoly Karpov (USSR), U.S. Champion Walter Browne, young Dutch GM Jan Timman, and Icelandic GM Fridrik Ólafsson. Karpov won the event convincingly (4.0/6), ahead of Browne (3.0), Timman (2.5), and Olafsson (2.5). Karpov’s only wins were against Browne and Olafsson; all other games were drawn. This report details the tournament format, full results (crosstable and Karpov’s round-by-round scores), and annotates Karpov’s game versus Olafsson. We also note historical context (Euwe’s role and photo archives) and provide diagrams and a timeline of the event dates.

Tournament Details

The event is often referred to as the Dr. Euwe Jubilee Chess Tournament (also “Euwe-vierkamp” or “VSB Euwe Memorial” in later years). It was organized in honor of Max Euwe’s 75th birthday. A ten-day festival in Amsterdam (May 11–20, 1976) featured blitz, simul, and this double round-robin four-player tournament as the highlight. The playing venue was a tent on Museumplein, with the main tournament games at the Van Gogh Museum. Euwe himself attended (see photo) but did not play; the invited grandmasters all ranked near the world top-ten. Karpov had become World Champion in 1975 and this was his first Dutch event since then.

  • Format: Double round-robin (each pair of players met twice, once with each color).

  • Players: Anatoly Karpov (USSR, reigning World Champion), Walter Browne (USA), Jan Timman (Netherlands), Friðrik Ólafsson (Iceland).

  • Dates: Rounds 1–3 on May 14–16; Rounds 4–6 on May 18–21 (May 17 a rest day, May 20 was Euwe’s birthday celebration). (For example, Round 5 was played Tuesday 18 May.)

Schedule and Standings

The six rounds were spread over eight days as shown in the timeline above. Contemporary news reports (e.g. Canberra Times, 21 May 1976) confirm Round 5 on 18 May, after which standings were Karpov 3.0, Timman 2½, Olafsson 2½, Browne 2.0. Karpov secured sole first by drawing Timman in Round 5. The final standings are listed below and in the official crosstable.
